France captain hits back, calling the comments “brazen racism” as the French Football Federation moves toward legal action
In a shocking episode that has once again exposed the ugly face of racism in football, Paraguayan senator Celeste Amarilla unleashed a vile, racially charged tirade against Kylian Mbappé after France’s 1-0 win over Paraguay in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16.

The match in Philadelphia was decided by Mbappé’s penalty in the 70th minute. Tensions boiled over at the final whistle when the France captain appeared to ignore a handshake from Paraguay goalkeeper Orlando Gill. Gill responded by throwing the ball at Mbappé, sparking a brief melee.
Hours later, Amarilla — a senator from Paraguay’s Liberal Radical Party — posted a series of inflammatory messages on X that quickly went viral for all the wrong reasons.
“This brute hasn’t even learned to write. Instead of breastmilk, he grew up sucking on coconuts, and the most educated creatures he ever heard were chimpanzees. You should’ve given him the middle finger, Orlando Gill (Paraguay GK). A colonized Cameroonian, pretending to be French, resentful, newly rich, arrogant, and ugly. He was nervous and scared to death all game, like his whole team. They didn’t even manage to score a single goal, until they got lucky with a penalty. The only thing many of us blame the team for is not giving him a full-handed slap at the end of the game. I’m not even a football fan.”
The remarks, dripping with racist stereotypes about Mbappé’s Cameroonian heritage and upbringing, drew immediate and widespread condemnation.
Mbappé’s dignified response
Mbappé did not stay silent. In a measured but firm statement posted on X, the France captain wrote:
“Madame Celeste Amarilla, you are a despicable woman and unworthy of your position. You do not represent Paraguay, that country which has sweated passion and honour throughout the competition. Through your recklessness and your brazen racism, the entire world has already forgotten the journey and the historic effort that your players accomplished during this World Cup.”
The French Football Federation (FFF) went further, announcing it would file a report with prosecutors to pursue judicial action against Amarilla.
A familiar and unwelcome story
This is not the first time Mbappé — one of the world’s most prominent Black athletes — has faced racist abuse. The incident comes at a time when football governing bodies continue to battle discrimination both on and off the pitch.
While Paraguay’s players earned praise for their fighting spirit and defensive resilience in the tournament, Amarilla’s outburst has unfortunately become the dominant talking point from the match.
The senator’s comments have been described across the football world as “abhorrent,” “despicable,” and “unacceptable.” Many have pointed out the irony: her words have overshadowed the very Paraguayan team she claims to support.
What happens next?
France will now prepare for their quarter-final against Morocco, while the fallout from Amarilla’s posts continues. Legal experts say any criminal complaint filed by the FFF could face jurisdictional challenges, but the political and reputational damage to the senator is already significant.
For now, the focus remains on the pitch — where Mbappé and France continue their quest for World Cup glory, and where the beautiful game tries, once again, to rise above the ugliness that sometimes surrounds it.
