The England national team has been given the green light to use Sildenafil (the active ingredient in Viagra) ahead of their FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 clash with Mexico at the Estadio Azteca.
The move is completely legal, as Sildenafil is not on the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) prohibited list for the tournament.
Why Viagra?
The Estadio Azteca sits at 2,240 meters (7,350 feet) above sea level. At this altitude, the air contains significantly less oxygen, which can cause fatigue, reduced stamina, and breathing difficulties — especially for teams not acclimatized to high elevation.
Sildenafil works by dilating blood vessels, particularly in the lungs. This can improve blood flow and oxygen delivery, helping players cope better with the thin air.
Official Stance
According to reports, England have received regulatory clearance to use the medication if needed. However, there is currently no confirmation that the players will actually take it during the match.
England manager Thomas Tuchel has previously highlighted the challenge of playing at altitude with limited preparation time.
Scientific Backing
Sildenafil has been studied for its potential benefits at high altitude. It is sometimes used to prevent or treat High-Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE) by improving oxygenation. While its effects on athletic performance at moderate altitudes (like 2,240m) are debated, the drug remains legal in football.
